Jakov Papo graduated with the highest honors both his Bachelor and Master degrees from the Betzalel Academy of Arts and Design(Jerusalem). He was a student of the famous painter Mordechai Ardon.Born in Yugoslavia in 1933, Jacov Papo has survived some of the worst experiences that world history has had to offer.
A man of passion, these experiences are sometimes powerfully evidenced in his art, which demonstrates a number of various styles, from highly emotive, bold abstracts to real life depictions that incorporate the smallest detail.
COMMENTARY/h2>
"My art is not so much an act as an expression of feelings. - Feelings that have been a reaction to forces that impacted on me through my life. The expression in my art aspires to be abstract in depicting those feelings...Those moments...Those scars. My art unlocks the past lost in my subconcious and when creating, those old feelings have reign.
The beginning of the technique started over 20 years ago and is my way of expressing what I have seen. I start by creating a work that I see in my minds eye. After the painting has been finished, and while the canvas is still wet, I place a clean canvas over what I have just created. The abstract spots I see in the second canvas help me to express myself and do a new creation.
The two canvases are mirror images in backgrounds only. The final definition is a different story.
There are times however, when I have no predefined idea and the pictures take on a life of their own, almost creating themselves out of the canvas and paint."
